Position Title:   Adult Leader Development Specialist

Reports to: Adult Leader Development Manager

FLSA Status: Overtime eligible

Service Center: Ogden, Salt Lake and American Fork

How the Adult Leader Development Specialist Contributes to our Transformation

Adult leaders are the "secret sauce" of "Girl Scouts" and are essential to the way in which our program connects with girls. Through them, the program should be delivered in ways that are consistent with the brand promise for girls and their families/support systems.

The Adult Leader Development Specialist will:      

  • Proactively mentor Girl Scout Troop and Community leaders so that they are capable of delivering programs and member experiences consistent with the brand promise.
  • Ensure that troops are retained through effective leader development and transitions.
  • Mentor leaders in the art facilitating girl-led experiences, which is central to the Girl Scout program

What You Will Do

Within a Geographic "Portfolio" of Troops and Communities, Mentor Adult Leaders to Increase Program Effectiveness through:


Leadership and People Skills

  • Build effective relationships with the purpose of increasing the leaders' abilities to:
    • facilitate girl-led experiences
    • effectively engage caregivers, and
    • work with other adult leaders.
  • Demonstrate effective mentoring relationships with individuals diverse in skill, experience, education, language, generational perspectives, culture, etc.
  • Ensure adult leaders understand and utilize channels of Member Support, Training, website and electronic communications for day-to-day support.
  • Report on the status, concerns, and trends within individual portfolio
  • Assist in successful retention of all troop types. Work in conjunction with council program specialists as troops progress to new grade levels to ensure continued success.
  • Provide timely support and problem solving when crucial conversations are necessary.
  • Spend about 75% of your time in the field working with volunteers

  Girl Scout Program Mastery and Confidence 


  • Identify areas of additional training, navigation or support needed for leaders; help them find the Girl Scout tools, resources and answers to be more effective in the program.
  • Ensure leaders use and optimize the Volunteer Tool Kit; help lead them through enhancements and changes over time.
  • Ensure long-time leaders are trained, understand and become advocates for new program features and tools so that adults and girls have a consistent Girl Scout program experience.
  • Increase the understanding of, comfort with, and usage of Journeys in order to have higher impact on girls, retain girls, and support girls in earning Girl Scout awards.
  • Be a conduit of Community and Troop level event and program information so that field-level activities are more visible in overall communications and calendars, and can have a higher impact on girls.
  • Ensure that troop leaders are confident and motivated to engage girls, families and the local residents in the Girl Scout Cookie Sale so that:
  • Girls receive important program benefits
  • Local communities engage with Girl Scouts, and
  • New girls learn that they can belong to the program
  • Ensure leaders understand and can navigate national and council Girl Scout policies, procedures, and standards when appropriate.

  Improve Council Support by Communicating Field-Level Activities and Customer Feedback to Council Staff


  •  Report feedback, requested performance metrics, and portfolio status in a timely and consistent manner
  • Use and optimize Salesforce to ensure individual leader and troop situations are visible to Member Support, Member Development, and other departments as needed.
  • Use Salesforce as part of your daily work, especially for tasks, activities, case management and escalation, as needed.
  • Work cross functionally with all departments to ensure goals and objectives of GSU are achieved.

Qualifications You Should You Have

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • Ability to build relationships that are within a preferred outcome, yet not too pushy.
  • Ability to lead change in positive ways.
  • The ability to work independently, take on a lot of responsibility, open to receive and give feedback, mentoring, coaching and the desire to attend training to learn new skills.
  • Have a proven track record working effectively with volunteers
  • The ability to work with a culturally and racially diverse group of people from all generations
  • The ability to help resolve issues that arise between people. Be an active listener to handle issues when they occur.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and manage timelines, and projects.
  • Proficient computer skills including E-Mail, Microsoft Office suite, Salesforce, and working with Smartphone remote technology?


Essentials Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License and willingness to travel to various work and meeting locations to meet with volunteers and staff
  • Dependable transportation is a must
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evening and weekends as needed
  • English Preferred Bilingual English/Spanish a plus
  • A passion for working with women and developing their leadership skills
  • A commitment and passion for the Girl Scout mission and an ability to effectively promote and communicate the Mission and Vison of Girl Scouts to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support of the future direction of Girl Scouts of USA and the need to engage a wider range of next-generation girls
